Compound Curves and Plane Changes Constructed with 2-Way Cold-Formed Metal Framing System

/ PROJECT

Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University | Richmond, VA

/ SCOPE

Define a curved framing system for interior wall to ceiling design features in the first floor and fourth floor gallery spaces of the Institute for Contemporary Art. Develop the 3D framing model and vet with the architect.

  • Coordinate framing development with architectural team and their basis of design.

  • Develop a cold-formed metal framing system to meet project specifications.

  • Fabricate and deliver approved CFS framing elements with installation instructions.

/ SOLUTION

Radius Track developed the cold-formed metal framing system using 3D modeling for architectural coordination and to expedite digital design-to-fabrication of precision framing elements.

  • Developed a framing system for curved wall and ceiling features and the tightly curved transitions connecting the two featured elements.

  • Utilized a two-way system of framing elements to provide installation layers which accurately set the geometry.

  • Extracted data from the 3D model for precision fabrication and to provide coordinated installation instructions.

/ RESULT

Radius Track delivered a two-way cold-formed metal framing system that was GEOMETRICALLY PRECISE and EASY TO INSTALL to most effectively utilize labor and meet the project schedule.
