Overview

Radius Track worked closely with the architect, structural engineer, and façade contractor to develop, engineer, and fabricate a cold-formed steel framing system defining the compound curving façade geometry with a tight 3/16 inch tolerance:

  • Digitally designed and vetted metal framing system independently supporting patterned tile façade
  • Compound curvature geometry meeting stringent Miami-Dade NOA requirements
  • Kit of Parts solution reducing system weight by nearly 60%

Problem & Approach

The exterior surface needed to be framed with the precision and continuity of a molded form while meeting three critical performance requirements. These included a vented cavity to manage drainage and airflow, Miami-Dade NOA compliance for hurricane-resistant construction, and a wall system tolerant of structural irregularities.

Developing this complex wall assembly required coordinating multiple layers of framing, sheathing, and furring to create an independent vented rainscreen system. Each layer had to move independently yet align seamlessly with the finished tile geometry.

Radius Track approached the design by eliminating the intermediate structural steel layer. This simplified the façade's connection details and reduced cost, installation time, and crane mobilization associated with structural steel fabrication and erection.

The team created a comprehensive 3D model of the existing structure and integrated the desired surface geometry in collaboration with the architect. Parametric modeling was used to refine the tile pattern and complete the design. Replacing intermediate steel with cold-formed metal framing lightened the composite wall system and enabled a flexible connection strategy.

“Kenpat is very proud of the exterior wall assembly at the aquarium building. This wall embodies the best of what we do through the use of advanced engineering, modelling, fabrication, and construction services in realizing the architect’s vision… assembling a core team to bring the right expertise at the right time was the key to the success of this project." – Paul Wolmarans, CEO, Kenpat USA (Contractor)

Solution & Results

Working closely with the customer, architect, structural engineer, and façade consultant, Radius Track delivered a kit of Parts solution meeting stringent Miami-Dade NOA approval requirements.

Key technical achievements included:

  • Reduced overall system weight by nearly 60% through cold-formed steel approach
  • Provided precise surface to support complex tile geometry with 3/16 inch tolerance
  • Delivered independent vented rainscreen system managing drainage and airflow
  • Enabled flexible connection strategy accommodating as-built structural conditions
  • Streamlined installation process saving significant time and cost

The engineered framing system delivered the required performance and accuracy while meeting hurricane-resistant construction standards for South Florida's demanding climate.
